Diabetes Facts
Who
has it?
In the US, among men and
women, over 20 years of age, approximately 8.7%, or 18 million adults, have some
type of diabetes. 9% of all men over 20, and 9% of all women over 20, have
diabetes. The chart below from the National Health Interview Survey, breaks up
the numbers in each age category.

Each year there are approximately 1.3 million new
diagnosed cases. This does not account for the numbers of individuals, who walk
around with diabetes, and it has not yet been diagnosed. The largest population
most likely to be diagnosed with diabetes, is the American Indian. The Latino
population ranks second, with blacks coming in third most likely, and
non-Hispanic whites to be the fourth group.
Today, diabetes is the 6th
leading cause of death in the US. It is also likely to be the most
underreported cause of death. Studies show that only about 40% of deceased
individuals with diabetes, have diabetes listed anywhere on the death
certificate. In addition only about 15% of death certificates list it as the
underlying cause of death. Even with this information, or lack of it, the risk
of death among people with diabetes, is about two times greater than that of
those without it.
Among the complications of diabetes, the most prevalent is heart disease. A
diabetic is 2 to 4 times as likely to die from heart disease. Stroke is 2 to 4
times higher in the diabetic population.
