How do you rate?

When it comes to your risk of diabetes.

Here is a list of risk factors that may increase your chances for getting Type 2 diabetes.

Age:  45 or older

Overweight:  BMI (body mass index) above 25; excess weight around the middle

Family History:  Parent or sibling with diabetes

Gestational Diabetes:  History of diabetes during pregnancy, or give birth to a baby over 9#

Glucose Intolerance:  Blood sugar levels that are higher than normal but not high enough to be called diabetes.  A fasting blood sugar level above 99 places you in this category.

Activity Level:  A very low level of activity or an inactive lifestyle

Medical Conditions:  High Cholesterol, High blood pressure, high blood triglycerides (a type of fat molecule), HDL cholesterol less than 35

Race/Ethnicity:  African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, Native Americans

Right now, Type 2 Diabetes has no cure.  However, there are many things you can do to prevent the disease, and/or manage it wisely if you get it. Eating a healthy diet, exercising, and maintaining a healthy weight for your body size; this can help prevent the consequences of diabetes. A healthy diet includes eating a variety of foods, including high-fiber, low-fat, low-cholesterol foods, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Any form, or amount of exercise would be beneficial.  However, 30 minutes, five days a week of moderate exercise is recommended. If you are overweight, losing excess weight will help your body better use insulin, and lower blood pressure, if that is a problem. Just a small amount of weight loss, 5% to 7% of body weight, can delay or prevent type 2 diabetes.
