Support Hose Can Prevent A Fall
Elastic venous compression can help alleviate the BP reductions associated with orthostatic hypotension, according to a poster presentation at the American Geriatrics Society Annual Scientific Meeting. Orthostatic hypotension increases an elderly person's risk of fainting and falling. Researchers measured BP with postural changes in 37 elderly people with orthostatic hypotension. The patients' average supine BP was 132/64. Over a 3-minute period, the average drop in BP when standing was almost 20 mm Hg. With elastic compression, however, the average BP drop when standing was about 10 mm Hg. Researchers conclude that elastic compression can significantly improve hemodynamic response to orthostatic hypotension.
